LEGO MODELS OF THE FUTURE: THE SELF SUFFICIENT CITY

As more and more life is concentrated in the cities and living within the Anthropocene era, as we are, resources are still not only badly managed but not fully understood.
This seminar is quick prototype to test out our possible roles as participatory citizens of the next-future sustainable cities, discussing the changing political, economical and social climate. It is a condensed exercise oriented towards the construction of a holistic understanding of the metabolism of our cities and our possibilities of acting upon them. Participants will be introduced into a quick view of the social, energy and material flows that build the experience of our cities, understanding the main inputs and the outputs of our urban life and understanding how to tackle them, how to hack them or how to re-organize them in order to achieve self-sufficiency.
The seminar provides the holistic overview on the material runnings of the city, with a focus on food, water, energy, matter, housing, facilities, culture, public space and transportation. Each participant will be asked to take on the role of the defence and management of one of these resources. Thus, participants will negotiate space, create connections and work together in creating new ways of approaching urban planning.
