Elections in contemporary democracies face three main threats: cyberattacks, the unlawful use of personal information for electoral propaganda and the dissemination of disinformation and fake news through online platforms, media and social networks. In the seminar we are going to focus on disinformation and fake news, as they undermine trust of citizens in institutions, contribute to polarization of public debate and interfere in the democratic decision making process. We will provide examples of democratic processes that have faced the challenge of deliberate and large scale disinformation, and consider the impact of fake news in elections held in 2019 (especially the European elections), as well as the effectiveness of the steps taken to provide secure and resistant electoral processes.
