ART AND SOCIAL CRITICISM

SECOND SEMESTER

SEGOVIA

One sometimes sees people walking through a gallery, catalogue in hand [ ] as soon as they have found the title or the name they walk on. People who have acquired some knowledge of art history nod wisely when they see a Rembrandt, wonderful chiaroscuro, and wander on to the next Ernst Gombrich in The Story of ArtThe quote above illustrates a struggle that many museum visitors probably recognize: how to make sense of an artwork? In this seminar we will treat art as a tool everybody can use. A tool that challenges the way we think about ourselves and the society we live in. We will discuss topics, such as cruelty, performativity, space and the digital and relate them to a wide range of art examples both traditional and contemporary. However, the emphasis in this course will be on contemporary art. During this seminar you will find out that reflecting on art also means reflecting on society. A seminar on art can, of course, not take place without looking at art itself. Therefore, one of our sessions will take place either in Museo Estaban Vicente or at an interesting contemporary art exhibition.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE ATTENTION FOR A MORE MEANINGFUL USE OF YOUR TIME

SECOND SEMESTER

SEGOVIA

Do you often feel that you should be spending your time better? This workshop provides students with knowledge and skills to boost their attention in an age of digital distraction, for better performance during and after their time at IE. We all love digital technology. At university, laptops, tablets and smartphones have become an integral part of our daily work, and our private lives. Despite the huge advantages of these tools, there may be a darker side to them. As more and more apps and tech-based tools try to grab our limited attention, many of us are struggling to focus on what is really important. Our human attention is a limited resource and we have to decide wisely which aspects of our environment to focus on – and what to ignore – in order to be productive. This workshop will introduce findings from decades of research on attention to help students boost their attentional resources, inside and outside the lecture room. Students will learn how attention works, how it can be trained to perform better professionally, and how to deal effectively with digital (and non-digital) distractions. We will begin the journey with 2 sessions of self-development and self-awareness to embark on the Mind Pillar offered by the Centre for Health, Wellbeing and Happiness. We are living in a world with multiple distractions, each competing for our attention and each in their own unique way drawing on our mental energy. Focusing your attention and reflective capacities on understanding the impact of emotions on your behaviors and mindscapes, as well as, enhancing your awareness of how your mind works and processes information will enable you to build a solid foundation on which you can further explore the role of technology as a strong attention deviator.
