AN INSIDE LOOK TO AN INDUSTRY THAT IS SHAPING THE CORPORATE WORLD: PRIVATE EQUITY
Private equity and venture capital funds attract hundreds of billions of dollars in investments, deploying them as capital in companies, developing ambitious business plans, and applying complex financial structures to their advantage, consistently generating superior returns than other asset classes. But, what is behind all this success? In this course students will gain a good understanding on how private equity investment works in a very practical and interactive way. After an introduction to the industry, the course will focus on understanding the process of value creation that private equity investors follow:
- Uncovering the attributes of a good investment - Which companies constitute a good investment?
- Determining company's valuation - What is the right price?
- Magnifying returns through financial leverage - How do we financially structure a private equity deal?
- Understanding company's growth - How does a feasible business plan look like?

JOAQUIN ALCALDE OLIVARES
He is an investment manager at H.I.G. Capital, a global $30 billion private equity fund, and currently sits at the board of Centros ?nico, Exterior Plus, and Royo International Bathrooms. Prior to that he was a manager at McKinsey & Company, and an investment manager at Developing World Markets, a $1 bn US private equity impact investment fund seeking both social and economic returns. He holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, a master?s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad Pontificia Comillas, and a masters degree in Industrial Engineering from Ecole Centrale Paris.
